Broadband nirvana in Bangalore

I recently got myself an Internet broadband connection through Airtel. So far, I am quite satisfied with their service. I opted for their 8 Mbps plan (something that is unimaginable a few years back) for 1299/- per month. Ten years back, I got my first taste of Internet through a phone modem with a speed of 9 Kbps - and yes, I was using a text based browser. 8Mbps is a far cry from that!

To give you an idea of how much bandwidth I am 'really' getting, I have captured a screen shot of 'Aritel speed test utility' running on my browser over my home WiFi.

Airtell home broadband Speed test

As you can see, I am not really getting 8 Mbps :) Following is their tariff:

Hope this helps in making your decision on choosing a broadband provider in Bangalore.

A new start (after 7 years...)

Yesterday was my last day working in Philips. I throughly enjoyed the last 7 years that I spent here where I learned a lot of stuff, from my mistakes as well as from the new technology/areas that I explored. Also, I made a lot of good friends, who had a very good influence on me, and I will always cherish the moments that I spent with them. And now, the time has come to start anew and to face new challenges.

I am joining Intuit Bangalore as a Software Architect. I am quite excited about this opportunity. From all the interactions that I had so far, Intuit look like a very promising place to work.

Got an XBox 360 Elite

Yes... I finally got my XBox 360 Elite. My brother helped me get this from Europe. So, it is PAL version, and the DVD region is 2. The region setting of XBox cannot be changed even once. This would mean that I will not be able to play any regional DVD movies on it :(

XBox 360 Elite is available in India exclusively through Indiatimes shopping and the price is Rs. 34,990. So my decision to buy this from Europe was well worth it.

XBox 360 Elite

While I was a student I used to playing Quake 3 Arena. Though I am not much of a gamer, I bought Halo 3 and I am thoroughly enjoying it. I have also taken a one month free subscription of XBox live. My profile on XBox live is here.

We are going on a small vacation...

First stop is to visit Club Mahindra resort at Kodaikanal.

To chart out the driving directions, I used Google map's new 'create personalized map' feature and here is how it looks.

This URL can be used to get driving directions from Bangalore to Kodaikanal.

Planing to buy a new laptop

Dell announced the availability of the new Inspiron 1720 line in India. The new Inspiron is built on Intel “Santa Rosa” notebook platform and is a budget-friendly, desktop-replacement. I was looking at upgrading my laptop and thought this is a nice time to do it.

The specification that I was looking at is as follows:
  • Intel® Core™ 2 Duo T7300 (2.0GHz/800Mhz FSB/4MB cache)
  • Windows Vista(TM) Business
  • Glossy widescreen 17.0 inch display (1920 x 1200)  => I really like this :-)
  • 256MB NVIDIA® GeForce® Go 8600M GT
  • 2GB Shared Dual Channel DDR2 at 667MHz  => The platform supports up to 800Mhz FSB, it is a shame the memory is this slow ;)
  • 160GB SATA Hard Drive (5400RPM)  => There is provision for an additional SATA HDD, but no RAID :(
  • CD / DVD writer (DVD+/-RW Drive)
  • Integrated 2.0 Megapixel Webcam

Automatic OPML sync for Flock

I have almost fully switched to Flock as my primary browser. It is a port of the FireFox browser with some of the online services build in. The services include:

The missing element is synchronizing the feed list (OMPL) with some online feed service. Hope they build it in soon...

What's happening to MovableType

I was extremely happy with MovableType - that is until I decided to upgrade to the latest version 3.33. Though the upgrade process finished without any errors, the system started behaving weirdly - the UI had lots of glitches. That is when I noticed that even after the upgrade the system was still reporting the previous version. I had wrote about it here.

There was no news from SixApart for almost a month! And today I saw a new blog on their site saying that they have (actually) released version 3.33 now. They announced that..

Today we are releasing required updates for both Movable Type and Movable Type Enterprise to fix a number of vulnerabilities affecting all previous versions of the platform. The current status of our security update process:

  • This is a mandatory update due to the severity of the combined vulnerabilities.
  • These vulnerabilities were discovered by our own team during a routine security evaluation.
  • There are currently no known malicious exploits targeting Movable Type for these issues.
  • We will be disclosing full details of the vulnerabilities on our Professional Network blog in a couple of days allowing you to update in the meantime without incurring unnecessary risk.

... and ...

If you are running a version of Movable Type older than 3.2, it is especially imperative that you to migrate immediately to version 3.33 due to the importance of fixes for the current issues as well as several significant security enhancements which have been made since your version was released.

Release mishaps do happen and I was only happy to see an 'new' release and eagerly started the upgrade process (again). To my surprise the UI glitches are still not fixed.

If you thought the glitches could be trivial, well I let you to decide for yourself...

MovableType Glitch

The glitch is there in 'create new blog entry ' screen itself - Which should be the most important screen in a blogging tool. The formatting toolbar is at the bottom of the screen as a set of stray text links!
I hope SixApart is listening!!!

Correction:
This is my mistake. I had not uploaded all the new static files (.JS, images and .CSS files) into the right place on my server. My static folder was configured to be outside my MT directory and I totally missed this!

On Intelligence

I am currently listening to the audio book titled 'On Intelligence' by Jeff Hawkins, who is also the CEO of Palm computing. The author is presenting a unified theory on how the brain works and how this knowledge can be used to create really intelligent machines.
Some of his ideas are quite profound, and will defiantly influence my thoughts on how FolkMind should be build.
I will write more about this once I finish the book.

Do we trust DRM?

Looking at the trend, I get to believe that most publishers still don't trust Digital Rights Management (DRM) technology. The fact that very few content publishers are willing to open up their shop in countries which are perceived to be vulnerable for copyright infringement, points to this state of affairs. Unfortunately (for me) India is part of this list! Examples of such companies include Apple's iTunes store, and Audible.

For Apple,  once you create an Apple ID, you cannot associate this ID with iTunes Store unless your credit card address indicate that you are not part of the black-listed countries. At Audible it is not as bad. You can get to buy *some* content, but not all! The policy seems to be differ for content from the same author even. As an example, you can listen to all of Dan Brown's books except for 'The Da Vinci Code'!

To me this is quite surprising. For one, most DRM technologies does not trust the customer to 'play fair', but it ensures (through other means) that the customer can only use the content in ways prescribed by the publisher (even though at times it gets into the way of fair use also). It gives the intellectual property owner and content publishers, not the purchaser - control on how it is used. So if it works, it should work for all people.

But then, what about all the stories of DRM being cracked? Well things might not always go as planned - but these systems are designed to handle such eventualities. And when things do go wrong, the crack will be available all over the Internet - which means the crack will be available in *all* countries and not just a select few countries. So why black-list a few?

Also the decision on shortlisting a country cannot be based on the presence (or absence) of strong copyright enforcement laws as every time the law is invoked, it provoked such strong backlash from the *community* that the content publishers had to withdraw their case.

You can read more about DRM here and I would appreciate your comments on this topic.

Philips Innovation Campus, Bangalore celebrates 10 years of operation

The company that I work for (Philips Innovation Campus), recently celebrated 10 years of operation. The celebration lasted for a whole week. Various fun-filled events were schedules through out the week and we had a grand party on the week end.

As a gesture of happiness, the Philips management announced to gift all PIC employees with a Philips MP3 player.

So today I received my player and here is a photo of the same..

Integrated Google Adsense to my blog

As you can see, I have incorporated Google Adsense into my site. According to Google..

Certain locations tend to be more successful than others. This "heat map" illustrates these ideal placements on a sample page layout. The colors fade from dark orange (strongest performance) to light yellow (weakest performance).

Based on this advise, I have inserted AdSense for the first two blog entries in the list. The following blog entry describes the process of placing AdSense ads between blog posts.

What's all the fuss about Movable Type 3.3

Six Apart announced on their site that they have released Movable Type ver 3.3. I was planning to revamp my blog and thought of using this occasion to upgrade the blog engine to 3.3. I followed the instructions and the upgrade went smoothly - except that now, parts of the system reports that the system is running ver 3.3 and at other parts it still shows ver 3.2.

Also the download always points to 'MT-3.32-en_US.zip'. Strange!!

Back from our vacation

We reached home after our long vacation. Apart from this small incident, we enjoyed the trip throughly. I wanted to blog about our experience during the travel itself - but this did not happen as it was difficult to get connected to the Internet as often as I wanted :-(

I have started to upload the snaps that I had taken. You can find them here.

Reached Rome and got pickpocketed

We reached Rome by train (thanks to Eurail pass) and within moments of getting off the train someone stole my valet! This is despite the fact that, I had kept the valet in my front pocket (which also had a zipper). The speed with which this happened took me off-guard.

I understand that such thieves act in coordination - one person would be responsible for distracting the victim and the second would do the actual act of stealing.

This is how (I presume) it happened in my case. I took the metro pass from the vending machine and started waking towards the train. Just then I saw a lady (who was walking past me), 'accidentally' drop a book. It was quite a heavy book and the sound of it hitting the floor was hard to miss. I was surprised that the lady did not realize this and prompted her about the same.

It was probably during this that I got robbed. Having successfully distracted my attention, her accomplice would have easily taken my valet. The accomplice would have noticed where I had kept my valet after taking the metro ticket.

Beer tasting in Belgium

In Belgium we visited some pubs with more than 200 varieties of Beer!

With some guidance from my brother Sherry, we had a chance to taste a few.

Note the amount of foam in the beer!
Each beer is served in specific glass with the name of the beer on it.

Pictures of a few more beer....

And some sparkling wine too..

My first vacation Photo

Ann waiting at the Paris airport. I am happy that I am shooting about 1 GB worth of pictures daily :-)

July 29, 2006

Reached Paris

We reached Paris at 8:45AM local time on 29th July. The flight was quite OK. If we choose English instead of French as the language, then the in-flight personal entertainment system would crash. This happened for Ann also. But both of us were quite tired and we had a nice sleep and this was not too much of a botheration.

The next flight to Amsterdam will be at 11:35.

[I could not find any public Internet, so I am writing this blog offline]

Gear-up for the trip

List of the gears that we are taking for the trip:

  • We got ourself each a good back-pack. Not the most expensive one, but a good one. One is quite tall and has a capacity of about 60 Liters! The other one is smaller (around 40 Liters) and this will be the one that we will be carrying around mostly. We are planning to finish all our packing in these two.
  • Secondly, we got ourself some very light summer clothing. Europe is going through a heat-wave. So I guess this will help.
  • For photography, I borrowed (from Venkat) some CF storage for my EOS 350D. Now I have a total of 1.75 GB storage! So I can shoot away (in RAW mode) to glory.  Also I am packing standard accessories like external flash, tripod, chargers etc.
  • I am also carrying my laptop (a IBM Thinkpad X41 tablet). I am hoping that I can continue to blog about the trip. Also the laptop will help free up the space on the CF cards when they are full.
Total weight so far for both of us combined is about 20 Kg, which is not bad (considering all the gadgets that I am carrying)!

D-Day minus 1

I have just one more day to finish all the preparation for my vacation.

Yesterday, I dropped my daughter, Liza with me parents at Trivandrum. My original plan was to fly with her to my home town on July 27th and come back on 28th. I chose to fly Air Deccan as they offered the most economical package.

After I had booked my tickets, I realized that this was really a bad idea. Air Deccan is known for flight delays and there are many occasions where they cancel their flights also. So if my flight back from Trivandrum gets delayed by more than 5 hours (which I understand is quite common with this airline) then I will miss my Amsterdam flight. This was too much a risk to take.

So I managed to prepone my travel back. As there is limited air connectivity to Trivandrum, prepoing would mean that I will be flying back in the same flight! This turned out to be trickier than I had expected! I had less than 10 min to disembark, hand over Liza to my parents (who were waiting for us at the airport) and board the same flight back.

The ground staff also helped me. When I got out of the plane, there was someone from ground staff,  waiting for me. He hurried me through and lead me directly to my parents. Once Liza was safe with them, they again hurried me to the security check, where my boarding pass was kept ready. After all this, I was the last person to board the flight.

But, like they say, "All is well that ends well!'.

Web 2.0 tools to help plan and track my vacation

This is to list the set of web 2.0 tools that I am using to plan and track my vacation.

Google spreadsheets:

We are using Google Spreadsheets to consolidate all the data that we are getting from the web.

This is really useful when multiple people are simultaneously gathering data (my brother and sister-in-law who are currently in Belgium are also actively involved). With this tool, I can share my spreadsheet with multiple people and all of us can simultaneously edit the contents. This also helps in keeping the data always in sync.

Great tool!

Yahoo Trip planner:

Yahoo trip planner helps in trashing out the next level of details in the trip schedule.

The process starts by specifying the start and end date of the trip. Once this is doe, we can start to add meat to the schedule.

Yahoo also facilitates this process:

  • It lets you check what others have done on similar vacations
  • Helps you decide on what to do at different locations, by giving a list of things to choose from (with user reviews/ratings).
  • Also integrates with Flickr. So if you have uploaded some photos, this tool helps you associate different photo with different locations.
  • Helps in creating a trip journal.

I have just started my planning here. Again, this tool helps in keeping the plans made by all of us in sync.

Google calendar:

Though Yahoo trip will help you create an agenda for the vacation, if we need more fine grained detail, we need a real calender. That is where Google calendar comes in.

Google also lets you publish this calendar where ever you want. And of course, multiple people can simultaneously add to the calender.

I have published our calender at my site here.

WonderLa Park - One reasom for popularity of my blog!

My web site statistics (which I maintain through Google Analytics) shows that, most new people (around 80%) find my blog through Google search.

I guess this is normal. But the strange thing is that, the most searched term on my site is "WonderLa". So naturally, the most popular content on my site is this blog entry that I made about my visit to WonderLa theme park.

Till recently, a search for the term 'WonderLa' on Google used to return my blog as the first entry. This shows that flash based site gets poorly indexed by search engines.

So, for those new visitors who are looking for WonderLa, please see the photos that I have uploaded into Flickr.

All of us, including my 2.5 year old daughter Liza, enjoyed this very much.

I will be post more photos on Flickr.

Amazing capabilities of Google Earth

Google Earth recently enhanced the level of detail in their database for Bangalore, India. Which mean, now I can spot my apartment on the map.

I have uploaded the Google locater here.

Route to Philips campus from my apartment

I tried to map the route that I normally take to reach my Philips office. With the tools available, I can even measure the distance. It is quite obvious that my current route is not the most optimal, at least when you look at it from above.

The level of detail available here allows one to look for alternate paths.

Alternate path to Philips Campus

The second path is about 3.5 km shorter - but I will have to go through a lot of mud road. But if I take the trafic congestion into account, this route can prove to be useful.

Google's Bangalore R&D Centre is hiring - Hmmm...

Google has recently opened an R&D centre in Bangalore, India – our latest full-fledged engineering facility outside the United States. We're looking to hire talented software engineers, top programmers and visionary computer scientists.
Interesting...

Back again

I was not able to blog for the past couple of days – I was migrating to a new hosting plan and in-between I got locked out off my own site!! Database issues :-)
This site – chiramattel.com, is currently hosted by accuwebhosting.com. They have a starter plan that that works out to about $45 a year.
In this plan I get about 150 MB of storage, Asp.Net 1,1 on Win2K3 and other goodies like one MySql DB. I am very happy with their customer service engineers. They provide an online chat and they solve any issues that you might have.
Good work guys...

Installed a photoalbum

Finally got enough time to install a photo album on my site. Already have uploaded some pictures.
The engine is FotoVision -

An Asp.Net sample that allows you to easily share photos on the web and demonstrates a variety of .NET technologies including Windows Forms, ASP.NET, Web services, and the .NET Compact Framework.

Really cool tool and very easy to install.

I bought a new watch

TimexDatalink.jpgMy new Timex Datalink can connect to any pc using a USB cable (supplied along with the watch). The watch has build in PIM capabilities. You can upload data into the watch through the bundled software.

The Problem:
The bundled software can only synchronize with Outlook and iCalc. But at office we use Lotus.
Fortunately the bundled software can be extended using plugins. I am in the process of building a plugin that uses the Lotus ODBC driver to get to the lotus db. I will post more info on this as and when available...
